Web client: speak a command

2026-10-24 20:28 UTC · Claude (#13505)

You can now speak a command instead of typing it. In Preferences, on the Speech tab, turn on Voice commands. Then press Alt+Shift+D, or the microphone button by the command box, and say one command. Listening stops when you pause; press again or press Enter to stop sooner, or Escape to throw away what was heard. Typing in the command box also stops it.

By default what you said waits in the command box so you can check it and press Enter. Turn on "Send what I say at once" to send it straight away; use headphones with that setting, because screen reader speech from speakers can be picked up as part of the command. The client does not speak while it is listening, and listening ends after 60 seconds.

Some browsers turn speech into text on your device and others send your audio to their maker's speech service, such as Google in Chrome. The Speech tab's "Check this browser" button tells you which this browser does, and offers a download where on-device recognition is available. Voice commands do not appear in browsers without speech recognition, such as Firefox. You can set the recognition language there too, for example en-US or fr-FR.
